Medieval Fair 2015 in the Spanish Village, Barcelona

Medieval Fair 2015 in the Spanish Village, Barcelona

Traditional Medieval fairs take place, probably, in every Catalan town throughout the year.  This time the Medieval Fair fair swept noisily around the Spanish Village in Barcelona, adding bright colors and fun to the already picturesque surroundings of this entertaining little corner in the capital of Catalona.

Everything, as usual – endless stalls with different things, disguised merchants, medieval warriors in never ending battles, birds of prey exhibitions, wandering musicians… As a result, everyone is happy – both rested parents and satisfied children😀.

Ceret, France

Ceret, France

The small French (formerly Catalan) town of Céret is only 18 kilometers from the Spanish border. The city is famous in the whole district for its sweet cherry – the best in all of France. As a result, in May a whole festival dedicated to sweet cherry is held here. Most probably avant-garde artists also loved cherries – in the beginning of the 20th century, the city served as a haven for many famous artists of this trend (Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani, Chagall, Dali), and the city was also called the cradle of cubism. Well, for a snack – Devil’s bridge, located at the entrance to the city …

Pubol

Pubol

Pubol is a Catalan village, part of the so-called “triangle” of Dali, which in addition to Pubol includes Figueras and Port Lligat in Cadaqués.

The landscapes are traditional for this region of Catalonia; fertile fields and green groves are all around. It was here that Salvador Dali acquired an ancient castle for Gala – his beloved woman and inspirational muse. The castle, dated 1065, was in a deplorable state, but the great maestro managed to turn it into one of his immortal creations
A detailed story about the castle of Pubol, accompanied by photos can be viewed at the link.

The ancient city of Empuries

Empuries is an ancient Greco-Roman city by the sea.

The ancient city of Empuries is located near the small village of Sant Martí d’Empúries. The first Greek settlers chose this place to build their settlement here as early as the 1st century BC, in the 3rd century the Romans built their own city behind a fortified wall just above the Greek settlement. Due to its excellent strategic position, the port city on the sea existed until the 16th century. Today, there is an open-air archaeological museum.

A short story about the history of the city of Empuries and photographs of the surviving fragments of ancient buildings found during the excavations of the city can be viewed here.

Ullastret

Ullastret

We continue to explore the ancient Catalan villages of our region. Ullastret – is not a very popular tourist site, like Besalu, for example. The village is famous for the remains of an ancient Iberian settlement, which are located 1.5 km from the village. Ullastret is not too young – the first news about it dates back to 834. The Gothic arch on the market square is noteworthy, as well as the ancient core of the village, enclosed by a stone wall.
There are only three restaurants in Ullastret , so if you do not want to stay hungry – book a table in advance!

A short story about our visit to this village and photos can be viewed at the link.

Rupit – a medieval city of witches in the heart of Catalonia

Rupit Рупит город ведьм
Rupit is an absolutely fantastic medieval catalan city, a must-see for the real tourist.
Not sure why, but Rupit gained the glory of the city of witches on most of internet web sites. In fact, according to the chronicles, in the Middle Ages, the witch hunters were not particularly zealous here, there were only three witches trials, while only in the nearest district area they got rid of 30 witches. On the other hand, perhaps it is for this reason that the witches in Rupit have survived and continue their experiences in witchcraft nowadays…
Walk along the suspension bridge (if you are not afraid), be sure to go down to the river and take a walk along its bed, walk along the stony streets of the city, go up to the hermitage of St. Magdalen, and if the witches are favorable to you – get tons of fun! And do not forget to buy a witch figure for good luck and for money in a gift shop!
Well, in order to further fuel up your interest in visiting this wonderful town, we invite you to take a small virtual tour with us!

Evening walk around Monells

Evening walk around medieval Catalan village of Monells

We already visited the tiny medieval Catalan village of Monells in December 2014.

This time we decided to visit it in the evening – in the artificially dim light the numerous arches of Monells look amazing. The mysterious atmosphere of the Middle Ages completely captures the consciousness… Also, the number of people for such a tiny and inconspicuous village is surprisingly overwhelming; probably, these people know some secret that we don’t know ???

Photo report about the evening walk through the village of Monels can be viewed at the link.

Boat trip on the Empuriabrava canals

Эмпуриабрава
Boat trip on the Empuriabrava canals.
Not far from the city of Roses, on the shores of the bay of the same name, is our Spanish Venice – the man-made city of Empuriabrava, built in the 60s-70s of the XX century. The canals here are interspersed with ordinary streets, so that every house has an exit to the street and an exit to the canal. You drive up to the house, drive into the garage, walk through the house, board a motor yacht – and go out into the sea!
In addition to yachting enthusiasts, the city is extremely popular with athletes who need wind (surfers, paragliders and other lovers of extreme sports). And do not forget about parachutists – in addition to the runway for small aircraft, there is also a wind tunnel in the city!
We are family people, we have enough adrenaline in our everyday life, so we boarded a boat and went for a slow glide along the canals. In Empuriabrava, you can rent a small boat equipped with an electric or gasoline engine to take a circular ride along the city’s canals. To do this, you do not even need to have a permission to drive a motor boat. After a short briefing, we raise the anchor and hit the road!
We invite you to take a virtual ride along Empuriabrava and see how it looks from the water.
