Flower Festival in Girona 2021

Фестиваль цветов в Жироне 2021

Hallelujah, it finally happened! From 8 to 16 May 2021, Girona again hosts the traditional annual flower and design festival Temps de Flors Girona. This year, however, A Cel Obert was added to the name, which translated from Catalan means – in the open air.

Yes, the coronavirus has made its own adjustments. To be fair, it should be noted that last year’s festival was canceled altogether. This year we were deprived of the opportunity to observe numerous flower arrangements (many of which were real gems of the festival!) inside historic buildings and their courtyards in the medieval part of the city; almost all compositions are in the open air in order to reduce the risk of a possible spread of a malicious virus. It should also be sadly noted the overall decrease in the number (and in some places – and in the quality) of flower arrangements of the festival in Girona – 83 in 2021 against 137 in 2019. Florists and designers, unlike the billionaires from the top ten of Forbes, seem to have been unable to increase their wealth by 20-30% during the pandemic, we wonder why?

Nevertheless, this wonderful holiday, as always, has added bright and rich colors to the appearance of Girona, which is already picturesque and friendly to travelers.

We invite you to take a short tour of the streets of Girona and see what skilful florists and design masters have prepared for us this year.

Flower Festival in Girona 2021

Part of composition 50 “The Last Flower” (L’Ultim flor), located in the Gardens of Doctor Figueras opposite the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants. Apparently, the insects found the very last flower and rushed to pollinate it with all their might!

Composition 49, located in the dry bed of the Galligants river. The authors seemed to have jinxed the holiday with their umbrellas, covering the bouquets from the rain. According to the forecast, it should rain most of the time on the days of the festival!

Composition 45 is a cube of flower textures.

Here the authors used a win-win bright red color at the entrance to the “Circus” – composition 43.

This is how the facade of the famous Arab baths looks like.

Part of composition 32 “Flood” (Riullada) on the stairs in front of the Cathedral of Girona. It was not possible to comprehend the deep meaning of the name, perhaps it meant a flood of flowers. By the way, it would be very glamorous to relax in the evening at this table with a glass of wine and by the light of candles …

Pages of books woven from flowers are part of the same composition on the stairs in front of the Cathedral.

Composition close to the entrance to the Cathedral overlooking the Basilica of St. Felix (right). Bicycles painted in a cheerful green color look very lively.

Composition 27 – “What should be your footprint?” (Quina vols que sigui la teva petjada?) on the stairs of Pujada de la Catedral. Along the stairs leading to the Cathedral, framed by flowers, there are giant representatives of the world of footwear – wooden shoes, boots, flip-flops, slippers etc.

Composition 22 – “Blue Planet” on the stairs in front of the Església de Sant Martí church.
***

Composition 23 – “Potemkin Stairs” (L’escala d’Odessa). The authors were clearly inspired by the 1925 black and white film “Battleship Potemkin” directed by Sergei Eisenstein. According to Wikipedia, in reality there was no shooting of civilians by tsarist soldiers in Odessa, just as there was no world-famous scene with a baby carriage rolling down the steps – all this was a genius invention of the director, thanks to whom this staircase became world famous😊.

Composition 11 on the façade of the City Hall of Girona.
***

Composition 61 – “Everything will be fine” (Tot anirà bé), located on the left bank of the Onyar river.

This is how the lanterns on the pedestrian Rambla of Girona are decorated.

View of the Onyar River from the famous Eiffel Bridge (Pont de les Peixateries Velles). Here is composition 17, the title of which, “Natural invasion” (Invasió natural), speaks for itself. The left-bank part of the bridge is in its usual, untouched condition. Beginning in the middle of the bridge, the presence of the pitiless flora becomes more noticeable and reaches its peak on the right bank – perfect dusk reigns here! The structures of the bridge are completely covered with greenery, leaving only a gloomy and dark passage. In other words, a graphic picture of how nature will take its toll as soon as humanity is destroyed by another particularly malicious virus …
***

Composition 19 – “Light of the Country” (Llum de país) on the Pont de Sant Agustí bridge.
***

Composition 58 – “Memoràndum” on Independence Square.
