We continue to get acquainted with the ancient cities of Catalonia, as well as the best beaches of the Costa Brava. Today – two in one – a medieval one, not even a city, but a small settlement – San Marti d’Empúries (approximately 120 meters in length, and as many in width!), as well as beautiful beaches surrounded by picturesque dunes and rocks, located between Sant Martí and L’Escala.
The town of Sant Martí d’Empúries, located on the wonderful coast of the Costa Brava in the southern part of the Gulf of Roses, has more than one thousand years, for many centuries the ancient Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans have visited here. Once upon a time there was the ancient city of Empúries, on the site of which is now the archaeological museum; Well, right in front of the ruins of the city are magnificent sandy beaches – a favorite vacation spot of local residents.

The surviving fragments of the old castle, which is famous for the fact that here, according to the invention of the Spanish writer Victor Mora, lived the hero of the most famous Spanish comic book, Captain Thunder (El Capitán Trueno). By the way, the comic was very, very successful – it was published from 1956 to 1968 and was popular not only in Spain, but also in Italy, Greece, Portugal and France, as well as in Latin America. Well, the ruins of the castle are included in the list of the architectural heritage of Catalonia.

In the square in front of the Església de Sant Martí d’Empúries church there are two restaurants that are very popular among locals and visiting tourists. The one on the left – L’Esculapi, specializes in tapas – there you can find all kinds of various snacks; the one in the center of the picture – La Terrassa d’Empúries – a restaurant serving traditional Mediterranean cuisine.

In the middle of the picture you can see a man-made wall made of stones – the remains of an ancient Greek pier in the port of Empúries. The sandy beach at the Greek pier is called Moll Grec.

A narrow sandy strip connects the Muscleres Grans beach with fairly large rocky islets.
